*열차(列車)를 *표정속도(表定速度)로 분류(分類)한 열차의 종별이며, 정차역(停車驛)도 적어 *급행열차(急行列車)보다 빠른 열차로 여겨진다. 간단하게 특급(特急) 또는 *특급 열차(特急列車)라고 하는 경우가 많으며, 일반적으로 *특별 급행 열차(特別急行列車)는 다른 열차보다 *시발역(始發驛)에서 *종착역(終着驛)까지의 거리가 길다.
